DJ Massive – The Shaker Song (Fat Props)

Saturday, August 28th, 2010

Here’s an EP that I’m a bit hesitant to post since it’s such a top personal fav, but it still manages to stay under a lot of people’s radar – I would almost rather eventually drop it in a mix or something like that. But, it’s been ages since I recorded an oldskool mix, so here you go. DJ Massive did a BUNCH of cool EPs before disappearing off the face of the earth (anyone with contact info for him – PLEASE CONTACT ME!!). This EP is arguably my favorite by him. Ironically it’s the second track on each side which is the top pick for me – on the A side you have “Slammin”, a frantic almost happy hardcore sounding track which Easygroove dropped in Dreamscape VII to devastating result. And on the B side, you have this absolutely awesome proto-ragga jungle track – similarly hyperfast dense breaks coupled with ragga vocals that don’t let up. absolutely sick tune, A+++ / good communication / would buy from again, etc. :)

Rhythm Syndicate – I Wanna Make Love To You (Raga Rave Mix)

Sunday, August 1st, 2010

Here’s a track which may be unknown for even the most diehard obscurity-seekers… almost no one has it listed on discogs, and the few people who do seem to be general dance music single collectors rather than oldskool collectors. It’s far from rare though, with tons of copies in the $1-3 range – no doubt hiding in plain sight by virtue of being a reggae/R+B single with just one hardcore remix on it. The remix in question (the “raga rave mix”) is a late 91/early 92 sounding track. It reminds me a bit of early SL2 stuff a bit – straight ahead, simple and kind of catchy. There’s also some decent vocal chopping later in the tune. Maybe not the most interesting track ever, but a bit fun to mix due to the 4/4 intro section and halftime breakdown.

Rude Boy – Musicology

Sick bit on Biology Records here. I forget if I’ve posted any of their tracks before but they’re a somewhat underrated label. This is the first release and definitely one of my favs on the label, a solid ragga hardcore jam with the classic “Hardcore Will Never Die!” sample. A large portion of this track was sampled in DJ Scud’s remix of Panacea’s “King of the Jungle”, which is kind of funny since I remember some sort of scene drama years ago about someone sampling Scud’s beats.

GBH – Reach The Sky

Monday, July 13th, 2009

Here’s a single I bought years ago and forgot about until recently. In all that time, I don’t think I’ve ever really listened to the B side. Instead I stuck to the (admittedly strong) A side tune “Back to the Grave”, which combines an MC Duke vocal line, an assortment of heavy breakbeats (including the “give it up + turn it loose” and the “apache”), and a nice skank part.
Recently, someone suggested I check out the B side, and they were right – it’s an equally good tune. which starts full-force and doesn’t let up until the end of hte track. Sample-wise, “Reach the Sky” features the Tongue N Cheek “Nobody” acapella as used in Acen Trip 2 the Moon (”take me higher”), plus the oft-used (in tracks by DJ Junk, Search + Destroy and many others) “we’ll keep climbing, till we reach the sky!” acapella line. There’s also a bit that sounds like more MC Duke in there as well.

As for who did this EP, I’ve got no idea – discogs claims it was released on a Boogie Times sublabel, and DJ Odi confirmed that he has a very similar looking sublabel release on Boogie Times, so it may indeed be from them. That still leaves the question open which artist produced the track though.

Hardcore Rhythm Team – Raggaclash

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

I’m a big fan of those ‘93-’95 ragga jungle cash in tunes made by producers who knew nothing about jungle – resulting in that ramshackle ‘crack jungle’ sound exemplified by tunes like this and LPs like this, but today’s offering features something else entirely – rave producers trying to imitate ragga!

The tune opens with an attempt to conjure up a rural scene (via the theme from Emmerdale) with a bit of dialogue from a raver looking for tickets to ‘The rave down the farm‘, but even though ‘92 was the peak year for illegal raves, things seem to have changed – as the unintentionally hilarious pastiche patois response points out – ‘No mon, we’re going to the ragga rave‘… cue a bad impression of the Sleng Teng bassline and some slapdash (and surprisingly slow) breakbeats.

There’s plenty of other incongruous little touches here – the out of tune stabs, the very un-ragga ‘Rockin’ in a ragga style‘ vocal, those weird gaps at the start of the breakdowns that throw the whole tune out of kilter… the overall effect sounds like a bunch of monged out rave producers given 5 minutes with an Atari ST in an attempt to make a ‘ragga’ tune and cash in on the latest trend – and yet there’s a certain innocent charm about this mawkish effort, its just so wrong in every way that you can’t help but admire it’s hodgepodge lunacy.

Hardcore Rhythm Team – Raggaclash

I don’t know much about the Hardcore Rhythm Team (an unfortunate choice of acronym), and this is one of those £1.99 tunes that I picked up in an auction years ago to justify postage for some other winnings – purely on the strength of the title and cover. Apparently it was also released as white label on Badboy records with the deleted ‘One Love’ on the flip. Furious records had a few releases in a similar vein, none of which I have, though it might be interesting to hear how their twisted version of ragga-rave progressed…

Princess Of The Posse

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

One of the lesser known aliases on Labello Blanco, Princess of the Posse put out two great singles plus a few comp tracks. It appears that POTP was actually Bug Khan, of “Made In Two Minutes” and “Go Down Baby” fame.

The first EP has a bit more hardcore influence, including a a great overly dramatic intro that seems to go on forever (especially when mixing the tune if you’re trying to fast-forward to the main synth part), plus a wonderfully craptacular guitar sample that always reminds me of the video game NARC and makes me smile when I hear it in old tracks.

Princess Of The Posse – Chillout

This second EP is a year later and thus has even choppier, more outright jungley beats, ragga vibes and heavier more pronounced sub bass.

2 Da Core – Super-Ragga Sunday

Sunday, February 1st, 2009

Here’s 2 great tracks by 2 Da Core, best known for their “Rub a Dub” single. That main tune (which you might recognize from mix tapes, it’s that tune with the “I’m… just a rub-a-dub soldier…” sample) is great, but I prefer the B side which has some nasty squelchy synths.
2 Da Core’s other single is also choice, the A side “Na Touch” it features ragga vocals and heavy sampling of Success N Effect’s “Roll it Up” (Bass Kickin Beats). It’s pretty straightforward, but the frantic success and effect sampling part is amazing. Anyone know the ragga sources on either of these tracks? .

DJ Exodus & Woody, take 2

Friday, January 30th, 2009

Earlier today I posted a youtube video of the DJ Exodus & Woody “A Classic Skank” EP, which is probably my favorite Skeleton Records EP but one I haven’t tracked down yet. By sheer luck, the guy who originally posted the youtube video (freaky2uk) left a comment and emailed me the tracks. Thanks man! Normally I only post stuff I’ve ripped myself, but considering this is an exceptional EP and I know that the person who ripped it is OK w/ me sharing it, here are two of the three tracks from the EP.
“A Classic Skank” combines a classical piano part ala one of the Lighter mixes (but 2 years earlier), with the beltram “ecstacy!” vocal and top shelf beat programming. “Feel The Vibe” raises the rhythmic stakes even more… heavy bass, ragga toasting with amazing beats that are absolute ear candy in of themselves.

Nice one Freaky2UK… you can check more of his youtube rips at http://www.youtube.com/user/freaky2uk

Subject 13 – Mash It Up DJ

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

Although he started releasing records back in 1990, this is from Subject 13’s first record which I would class as full-on hardcore jungle. It’s a quality straightforward ragga hardcore number: no crazy edits, ridiculous synth parts or any such surprises… just solid chunky beats, pianos, well sequenced vocals, and plenty of BASS.

Unit-ee & DJ Biz – Take the Music

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

Another excellent, easy to find & heavily overlooked track. I think if the production on this had been a bit better it could have been a lot bigger. As it stands, it’s still a great catchy ragga hardcore track. Sorry about all the clicks and pops, my copy of this is pretty well worn since it’s such a great tune…
