The Witchdoctor – Drone

Sunday, March 3rd, 2013

Here’s a tasty early hardcore track from the underrated Mutant Records label. Combining the KC and the Sunshine Gang “Let it Go” break (used most popularly in Zero B – Lock Up) with electro bleeps, this tune shows the stripped down earlier sound of hardcore, before bedroom producers started layering up a million mad breaks and samples at a frenzied pace. Because of its stripped down nature, “Drone” is probably better suited for mixing than home listening, but at 3 1/2 minutes it gets in and out before getting even slightly boring.

Underkut – Both Ends (DJ Fusion Remix)

Wednesday, January 30th, 2013

It’s been quite a while since I posted a 1991 tune, I might need to make that up with a few posts of heavy early tracks. This one is a personal favorite which I finally tracked down as part of a 10″ doublepack reissue from 1994. The reissue contains the original 1991 EP on one plate, plus 2 new 94 remixes on the other. Even though the remixes are good, the originals still do it for me… just so many excellent samples in those versions, all working together nicely! As an added bonus, on the repress version at least (not sure if the original is pressed at 33 of 45), you can easily play it at 45rpm and mix it with 94 jungle stuff.

As with a lot of the later stuff on Mendoza, this EP a bit pricey and hard to find, but “Both Ends” is definitely one to keep an eye out for, either in original form or as part of the remix EP.

Shaft – Techno Hallacaust EP

Tuesday, August 21st, 2012

Here’s an early track by Shaft, aka Mark Pritchard of Global Communication and Adrian of The Anthill Mob… they’re better known for their “Ruhbarb and Custard EP” on FFRR, which was one of the better toytown tunes of 91/92. No childrens themes on this EP though, just some rough early hardcore!! Pretty skeletal in structure but heavy as anything with nice squelchy synths and vocoded electro vox backed by both drum machine drums and a subtle beatboxing breakbeat. Heavy stuff, also a pretty cheap and plentiful EP to pick up.

Derek C – Can’t Stop the Feeling

Friday, June 29th, 2012

Here’s a nice 91 whitelabel I picked up for 50 cents in LA earlier this year… reissued later on this EP, “Can’t Stop the Feeling” uses the classic Mainline acapella by Jason Load Experience feat Ivonya, as used in loads of hardcore/jungle tracks (Omni Trio – Mainline, Lemon D – Feel It, 4 Hero – We Bring the Trophy, etc), with some big synths, solid breaks and a kind of interesting gated horn part. Not the craziest hardcore track ever, but definitely a fun track.

Stu J – Gadget

Friday, May 11th, 2012

OK, skipping the obscurities for a second and posting a long time favorite 91 track here… Despite being a relatively early tune, there’s quite a few parts in this one. The hip hop amen / combo break down leading to the simple synth drop works every time! Stu J went on to do some more 4/4 type hardcore stuff… even Gadget part deux already had stomping beats throughout! This one is definitely one of the all-time small label/whitelabel 91 classics in my opinion, simply a must-have for fans of hardcore from that era.

Lloydie Crucial & Peter Ranking – The Cow (Don Gorgon House)

Friday, March 23rd, 2012

Here’s a track I put in my recent mix for beantownboogiedown.com (cop that if you haven’t plenty of great lesser known tunes in there w/ a full tracklist provided). This tune in particular is a nice 91 ragga hardcore jam by Lloydie Crucial & Peter Ranking, who collabed on a number of great ragga hardcore EPs on labels like Production House before Lloydie Crucial went on to do ragga jungle as “The Concrete Jugnlist”. I’ll admit, like that Kingsound #2 record I upped recently, this might be somewhere between hardcore and house with some people considering it more house, I’ve got it pitched up how I have it in the mix, somewhere between +6 and +8%. It’s quite a repetitive tune, but the samples are all excellent, the classic ragga vox + hardcore synth + break combo never goes stale. Plus, as the track name indicates, you get a somewhat inexplicable “moo” sample on top, which doesn’t sound nearly as ridiculous as it seems it might!! Unlike a few things I’ve posted recently, this is probably a lesser known release, not on youtube etc… I took a chance on it unheard and wasn’t disappointed, still plenty of cheap copies around to grab if you like it!

Trigger – Stratosphere (Techno Mix)

Sunday, February 19th, 2012

Here’s a nab from my Cali trip… I already had a copy of this Trigger EP but couldn’t pass up a slightly better condition double for $1.00 (especially with that great picture sleeve staring at me!)

“Stratosphere” has got to be one of my favorite Belgian rave tracks of all time, without question. Despite being very much a Belgian tune synth wise, the breakbeat is quite prominent in it (Assembly Line break layered with a grunt most likely taken from Erik B & Rakim “Let The Rhythm Hit Em”, as used in Trip To The Moon 3). The little vocal breaks and classic Belgian synths are great as well, shame it gets a bit jazzy towards the end, but still an absolutely tuff tune and must-nab.
The artists behind it (Geoff McCoy and Dino Majore) also did the classic Destroyer – “Senses”.

Unknown Artist – The Top Buzz EP

Tuesday, February 14th, 2012

Here’s another record I grabbed on the cheap in SF, one I thought was by Top Buzz but discogs claims isn’t. On one hand that could be true since there’s certainly none of their patented “jungle techno” sound at play here… on the other hand, it’s from earlier than their other releases and one side of the record actually says “jungle techno” on it… so, your guess is as good as mine!

Either way, this is an interesting 91 no-label release: a few ravey hardcore tunes which are pretty solid and effective for 91 stuff, coupled with a dj mix of three tracks on the b side. As someone pointed out in the comments, this tune is a cut down version of Skin Up “Blockbuster”, 91 ravey hardcore with silly E related samples.

Demon Boyz – Jungle Dett

Saturday, January 7th, 2012

OK I’m cheating and posting a more well known track… in fact, I’d wager it It doesn’t get that much more classic than this tune. Although primarily a hiphop act earlier on, Demon Boyz did some amazing hardcore/jungle stuff as well. This tune is one of those early tunes alongside the best by Rebel MC , Ragga Twins and SUAD, which show the final merging of all necessary elements (hiphop breakbeats, ragga bass and samples, techno synths) into a really coherent final product (hardcore/jungle). In fact, despite the fact this came out in 91, you could probably pitch this up and play it along side any old 1992 track, since all the same elements are there and the production is top notch. Still, it sounds great at a lower tempo as well, especially during the more ominous synth part.
Can’t recommend this one enough… pure vibes!!

Head Factor – Nuff Respect

Saturday, October 15th, 2011

More small label business here, in the form of a solid 91 style piano hardcore track. You get a classic piano part (not sure if original/sampled) plus the classic “RESPECT – KISSING” combo vocal as used in this later Origination track (making me think that maybe these both are in some other acapella together which these hardcore tunes sample from). The “Nuff Respect” title is appropriate since, in the style of some earliest hardcore singles, you end up getting 3 separate mixes of the same “respect” tune rather than different tracks on the EP. Not a lot of bang-for-buck in that sense, but definitely some variety between the mixes (in particular the B2 mix adds some nice stacatto bass). Also, this record tends to go for pretty cheap so still well worth seeking out.
