Kinetic – Dancefloor Justice

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

Trying to make up for the weeks of lazy posting, here’s another nice tune – this time some stripped down 91 hardcore. This track is way more basic than what I usually like, but it more than does the trick – a simple breakbeat, a catchy vocal sample (”get up, feel the dancefloor justice!”) and an even catchier piano part… good stuff!! I originally thought this was by the Boogie Beat artist Kenetic, but Discogs is claiming it’s by the same guy (Michael Hazell) who did the awesome Golden Girls “Kinetic” EP with Phil Hartnoll of Orbital.

OUTRAGE – Inside My Head (From My Hands)

Saturday, August 14th, 2010

Note: todays entry comes from the jungle producer 0=0. A month back, I received the following email:

Subject: hey guy…
i wanna contribute to the blog..

0=0

Nice and to the point, huh? No “hey how’s it going / digging your blog” formalities for this guy!! Anyway, knowing J’s tendency to not follow through on a lot of stuff but also knowing he’s a serious oldskool nerd,
I wrote back telling him “sure, send me stuff and I’ll post it” Didn’t hear anything back until a few days ago where I got this entry in my inbox. Hopefully there will be more to come!

Hey! First upload from me. (although Pete didn’t give me access to his back-end, sadly) I’ve been wanting to contribute to this wicked site for a while now. This is one of my favorite records ever. I found it in Bizzy B’s addict (a wonderful place to search for the holy grail). I love how it’s so apparent that it was made with turntables and an akai – pure poetry. An awesome dancefloor murdering offering from the same people that brought us that massive jam “Ladies with an Attitude” by Epitome of Hype. I haven’t heard anything else from this O.u.t.r.a.g.e artist. It’s a pretty obscure release (my copy says “limited to 300″). There is even a really funny amen track (1991!) on it but this “Inside My Head (From my Hands)” tune takes the cake with it’s scratched up Cuba Gooding “Happiness is just around the Bend” acapellas (listen to how chewed one copy of the record he’s juggling is compared to the other). It’s just raw.

Leo Anibaldi – Bassbar

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

Here’s an absolute classic that was on my want list for 13 years or so before I actually scored a copy on vinyl. Leo Anibaldi was more known for his awesome “sound of rome” style dark italian techno stuff, from the same scene that brought us Lory D, Andrea Benedetti, Gabriele Rizzo, etc. However, his first EP also had a great breakbeat hardcore track on it which was pretty ahead of its time, considering that the EP came out in 91. This tune is best known for being played by Top Buzz in their 1991-92 New Year’s Eve set, which is an all-time favorite for a lot of people.
Also, be sure to check This video of Lory D + Leo Anibaldi on Italian TV, where Leo Anibaldi plays some crazy rave track live which unfortunately never made it to vinyl.

Here’s a wicked track I forgot I had on vinyl, thanks to the oldskool hardcore facebook group for posting it today!

FZ – Forbidden Zone

Friday, March 19th, 2010

Here’s a cool EP I scored on a trip recently… I’ve been after this for a while, and one of the few advantages of being a total record nerd is that I can easily identify records like this simply by the label even when there’s no info on the record (why it probably managed to sit in a store for ages and ages). This is definitely one of those tunes that I wasn’t sure about when I first heard it, but the weird vocals eventually won me over and I’m totally hooked now. Both sides have a similar song, the primary difference being that the vocals on side A are pitch shifted up while the vocals on side B are pitch shifted down. No idea who made this or if they made any other records, anyone know a bit more about it?

Formicula 4 – Formic Acid

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

Here’s something a little different… a 91 techno track by several German producers including Mike Ink. Maybe not congruent with what I normally post but who cares… “this is acid… I’m gonna give you acid!!”

The Anixus – Feel Real Good

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

Respect to RenegadeGenius for posting this on Youtube, this is one of those obscurities that I think took people quite a while to figure out since it wasn’t a UK tune (The label and the producers are from Italy).

The Anixus – Feel Good (Love Mix)

Oversky Records also put out another sick single in the form of
Stone Age’s “Paleolitic” EP, a housier EP which still borders on hardcore and samples the Captain Rapp “I can’t stand it” vocals as used in Manix – “I can’t stand it”

Zone – Ghosties

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

Here’s a classic 91 jam that’s been stuck in my head lately. The b side tracks are pretty good too, especially the second one. I’m still looking for the other Zone EP which I’ve never seen for sale… if anyone has a spare vinyl copy for sale (yeah right!) or even some mp3s so I can ensure it’s worth tracking down, feel free to email me!

Zephania – Breathing Bass EP

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

Here’s one for the obscure white label crew. This EP definitely isn’t for everyone. The production on it is super low-fi (putting the “grimey” tolerance of even ardent oldskool obscurity fans to the test), however for some reason it sounds absolutely GREAT to me when blasted loud. It sounds like it was released around 91, given that’s when the First Zephania release came out, I’d tend to think it came out that year or was at least written then.

G Double E – Asylum Seeker

Monday, October 12th, 2009

Anyone who buys a fair bit of oldschool has most likely seen the name G Double E around – their B-Line from Hell single seems to turn up whenever I’m looking for hardcore EPs. I’ve got that EP, but aside from the cool artwork by a member of Genaside II, I far prefer this single.

“Asylum Seeker” is chock full of quality samples with a ton of different parts that seem to get thrown at you every 8 or 16 bars for at least the first 3 minutes or so. The cut up hip hop vocals seem pretty ahead of their time, if this track was indeed released in 91 like discogs claims. It’s a fairly long track, but the changing parts and numerous breakdowns mean there’s plenty of good points to mix out of.

Aside from this EP and “B-line from hell”, G Double E did a decent single on Jumpin and Pumpin, and This somewhat strange Prince remix EP. I’ve got that EP, and even though it seemed promising on paper (obscure Prince hardcore remix single with one of the better track titles I’ve seen in ages?? count me in), it ended up not being that interesting or great. Plus, at 10 minutes for the vocal version and 8 minutes for the instrumental, both tunes seem to go on forever. Strangely enough, Prince’s My Name is Prince EP featured several mixes with hardcore samples in them – the “Hard Core Mix” samples DMS – Exterminate, and the “12″ Club mix” samples Smart Systems – The Tingler.
