Defender – Feel It (Bass)

Saturday, April 17th, 2010

Oh my gosh, what an anthem… can’t believe I’ve held out this long before posting this one. The title says it all really – nasty darkside with absolutely massive sinister bass omnipresent in the track, and with occasional vocal snippets and break layers dropping in and out to keep things interesting. Aside from this EP, Defender did a couple of other good EPs- a split picture disc on lucky spin, an appareance on a great in-demand obscurity that’s been on my wantlist for ages, and some circa 96 releases I haven’t heard. This is tune he’s best known for though, and the one which popped up in all the mixes back in the day. “Feel It” also appeared on Speed Limit 2, which I have packed away on CD somewhere, but I prefer ripping vinyl for this site so this is from the original 12″.

FZ – Forbidden Zone

Friday, March 19th, 2010

Here’s a cool EP I scored on a trip recently… I’ve been after this for a while, and one of the few advantages of being a total record nerd is that I can easily identify records like this simply by the label even when there’s no info on the record (why it probably managed to sit in a store for ages and ages). This is definitely one of those tunes that I wasn’t sure about when I first heard it, but the weird vocals eventually won me over and I’m totally hooked now. Both sides have a similar song, the primary difference being that the vocals on side A are pitch shifted up while the vocals on side B are pitch shifted down. No idea who made this or if they made any other records, anyone know a bit more about it?

3 Sample – Streets of Rage

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

Someone asked me to post this recently when I posted another 3 sample track. I think I actually prefer “High On Life” to “Streets of Rage”, despite “Streets” being the better known and more in-demand track. Still, it’s a good tune which warrants posting. The other thing which made me want to post this was that a friend recently pointed me to a track on the Streets of Rage 2 soundtrack, which sounds like it’s using the classic Landlord “I like it” / Inner City “Good Life” riff as its basis! You can check out the relevant track below, and any video game music fans should click through to the “Streets Of Rage” fan site below which features soundtracks for all the games (apparently written by one of the best/ most well respected video game music authors of the early 90s).

Nebula II – Flatliners

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

Here’s a well known favorite that I still play regularly in non-oldskool sets… in fact I just spun this out last Sunday at a club down the street. Nebula II were probably best known for this track and “Atheama”, and while “Atheama” is great, this is my favorite – massive low fi descending synth line, a great slow down/speed up breakdown, solid breakbeats (not many early tunes I can think of used the Funky Nassau break other than Sonz of a Loop Da Loop “Far Out”), good vocal drops (”Let’s Do it” , “The Dreamer” etc )… in general it’s just a mad, energetic, awesome hardcore tune. The remix is good as well, especially with the ridiculously over the top bass which drops about 3 minutes in, distorting and squashing down the drums more than in any other oldskool track I’ve heard. I was going to post that as well, but I think I’ll save it for another day.

Also, while I’m posting Nebula II stuff, here’s a remix of “Atheama” done by me and a friend a couple of years ago as part of the “back2you” remix competition. I’ve tried to steer clear of posting any of my own music on here since this site is meant to be about classic tunes, but I think after 300+ posts, I can post one track.

Rhythm ‘N’ Ryme – Luv Drug

Friday, January 15th, 2010

I’ve been posting pretty frantic crazy tracks lately, so here’s a more melodic, simple and catchy track which is slightly reminiscent of “DJs Unite”. This track was written by MC Excel of the Asmo – Rushamuffin EP.

Tim Taylor – Istanbul (Taktix Remix)

Sunday, January 10th, 2010

Here’s a top favorite of mine. You may have heard the B side of this (”The Way”), as it’s been remixed a few times and features the classic Top Buzz sample “Are you really ready for some bloodclat jungle techno??!!!” Great tune, but the Istanbul Remix wins for me by far. The original of “Istanbul” is a good enough song, maybe a bit similar to Taylor’s earlier hit, Egyptian Empire “Horn Track” (which I’m going to assume everyone knows). The remix takes “Istanbul” in an entirely different direction though, chopping the original into a crazy 8 bar-long drum hook which comes back and is then further choppped later in the song. This 8 bar part was sampled in Venture FM “Atmosphere”, maybe some other tracks too though their names escape me now. The only thing that bugs me about the tune is that there’s a couple of dramatic one measure pauses in it which throw the measure count off, which means if you’re mixing it you have to pay attention or things will get a bit “unhinged”.

Cool Hand Flex – Lock Me Up

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

Here’s a great track by Cool Hand Flex, an artist who has got to be one of the most underrated from the pack of early 90’s hardcore/jungle producers. This is especially true given how prolific he was, both in writing his own tunes as well as engineering tunes on his label. This track in particular is one of his biggest, and was released on one of the Kickin x-pack comps as well as Hardcore Leaders II The nasty synth part in this tune is sampled from the techno classic Cybersonik – Technarchy, combined with a heavy break and a great main melody. While this doesn’t have the crazy chopped breaks of some of Flex’s other early tunes, it’s a total classic in my opinion.

Death By Stereo

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

I’ve previously posted about DJ Dance’s other less-known EP, however the movie “The Lost Boys” was on cable Sunday night and reminded me of his biggest tune, “Death By Stereo”. This track is unfortunately hard to find in original press, but there was a bootleg a few years ago of decent quality which is occasionally findable for cheap (I nabbed mine for 50p a few years back). This EP takes most of its samples (and its name) from “The Lost Boys”, including the theme music (”Cry Little Sister” by Gerard McMann), “Death by Stereo!” and “No! My Brother!”. it contains 4 different mixes of the same track, I’m posting the 3rd since it’s the most manic and reminds me a bit of Jem 77’s “Never Felt This Way (hyper mix)”.

We R 3 – Happiness

Monday, September 7th, 2009

I just had a pretty rough night Saturday; finding this record on Sunday almost made up for it. “Happiness” is a dead-simple piano stormer, something which doesn’t share ANY of the characteristics which initially drew me to oldschool (those being the chopped and layered beats, crazy sample usage, etc). Instead, this track is just a simple, catchy melodic piano and vocal lead track: happy but not over-the-top, more “uplifting” than “euphoric”. The logo artwork looks similar to other Boogie Times releases, leading me to believe that it’s by Dave Nodz.
Unlike most tracks I post, this record DOES go for a fair bit of cash… keep looking though and you may eventually find it on the cheap like I did :)

DBL Productions – Happiness

Friday, August 7th, 2009

Here’s one of my all-time favorite piano hardcore tunes, which I’ve been holding off posting so as to not run out of goodies early on.

DBL Productions – Happiness

“Happiness” samples the Sinammon – “Need You Now” acapella, used in Sonz of a Loop Da Loop “Far Out”, D’Cruze “Want You Now”, and, oh, about a BILLION other oldskool tracks.

Notice the line immediately after this “Happiness for you and me” bit is used in the great Breakouts tune Don’t Hold Back.

The beats in this tune are from House 2 House – “I Need Your Love”:

I’m pretty sure that the piano is an original bit played by Rob Haigh from Omni Trio, as it sounds very similar to the “piano breaks” he included on his Splice- Pianism EP.

Just try not to throw your hands in the air during that first piano drop… I dare you…
