Ramski – Dream of Horns

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

Here’s a bit of a strange track. It was released in 95 on the Boom Tunes label, which put out some decent choppy jungle releases. The other side of this EP is pretty good 95-style jungle, with a fair number of changeups and timestretched vocals and breaks.. but nothing which particularly stands out to me. However, this A side definitely got my attention: despite being released in 1995, it sounds straight out of 92-93! The track is way too slow for 1995 (I have it pitched up here), and the breaks and track structure don’t reveal any sounds that would take it out of the realm of a 1992 track. This can be confirmed by contrasting it with the B side:

Oh well, ’tis a quality tune regardless of when it was released. As is the case with many whitelabels/small label releases, I don’t know anything about the artist… Discogs credits him as being an MC on a Pandemonium mixtape but I’m not sure if that’s the same person though I guess it would be in the correct timeframe.

Shaka – 6 in the Morning

Sunday, April 4th, 2010

Sorry for the lack of updates, I was busy preparing for a DJ Set at an anime convention on Friday. Anyway, I’ve posted a couple of 92-93 tracks from Awesome so far, so here’s a later tune which is much more obscure but is a solid jam – jump up style hip hop samples with well mashed breaks. Shaka also did the excellent “Red like blood” single on Awesome which is worth nabbing as well.

Dreadi Knight & Dj Legacy – Yard RAVE

Here’s a nice B-side I found on some nondescript 95 record. Choppy 94-style jungle beats and the Cocoa T & Cutty ranks “The Going Is Rough” acapella (as used in Sonz of a Loop Da Loop “Bust That Groove”). Not much more to say for this one, check it and enjoy!

Biobreaks – Tenebre

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

I’ve posted a lot of Biochip C/Martin Damm-related material on this site since I started. No reason to break from that trend now, so here’s one of my favorite EPs from him. “Tenebre” reminds me most closely of his other Riot Beats EP as Psychic Parasite.
“Move” uses the classic “nobody move, nobody get hurt” vocal as used in Dance Conspiracy “Dub War”, Gunshot “Nobody Move”, and others. It also takes the main riff from “Der Klang Der Famile” by 3 Phase, as used in the Jeff Mills classic “Phase 4″ not to mention Bay B Kane’s “How Should I start”. Finally, there’s a bit of classic biochip acid in there, along with frantic pitch shifted breakbeats. Oh yeah, the “bad boy” sample from Hijack is in there too.

“What is that name” opens with the classic Poltergeist Biochip C used in “Hell’s Bells”, but gets more extreme than the original, sampling bits of DJ Hype “Shot in the dark” and again pitching frantic breakbeats all over the place.

The B side of this single is nice as well, featuring a solid ragga jungle tune that’s maybe more “playable” than the two tracks posted here. But since I love frantic crazy stuff most, these are the two you get.

Did I mention it’s named after a kickass Argento movie?

DJ SS – Rollidge

Here’s a classic from DJ SS. This is a must-hear for anyone into “Lighter”, especially mix #1 of that tune which reminds me quite a bit of this. Surprisingly this was only a “bonus” track on the Roller’s Convention part 3 single, though it’s well known and has since been repressed as an A-side. There’s so much wicked stuff in this track: amens layered on amens, dread bass, reversed vocal sample (Inner City “Follow Your Heart”) the timpani build 5 minutes in, etc. My copy is a bit battered as you can hear in the audio clip, but that’s bound to happen with a track this great.

Natural Forces – The Solid Rock Tune

Here’s another nice choppy amen tune by W. Wilson AKA Subnation (”Scottie”) and Warrior Bass. Nothing too out of the ordinary here, nice melodies and well chopped beats. This tune reminds me a bit of Studio Pressure stuff.

TDK – Ooh Sex (What’s That Mix) & Hype Time

Friday, September 11th, 2009

Here’s two nice tunes for friday by TDK, someone who was strongly affiliated with Bizzy B / the Brain Records crew. The first track is from 93 but actually sounds much more like a 94 tune… decent atmospherics, choppy breaks, smooth without being corny, tasty and tasteful stuff.
The second track (”Hype Time”), I finally bought maybe 5 years ago after seeing copies around everywhere and even finding one in my hometown of Boston (where there’s no oldschool vinyl) for mega-cheap – either this had a really large pressing, or people REALLY avoid this single. Eitherway, it’s a shame since “Hype Time” is a nice 95 jam. An assortment of quality breaks (Think,Cold Sweat, Life Could/Panther), simple bass + good hip hop snippet might not break down barriers of sound, but they definitely make for a solid ruff jungle track. The triplet think break part at 2:42-2:52 pretty much makes the track for me. “Hype Time” is also available as the B side on This EP, which is similarly cheap and easy to find. I’ve got both copies but haven’t A/B’d them, pretty sure they’re exactly the same track though. Either way, if you like this you can grab it for mega-cheap, so check it out!

Sayoko – Sukiyaki

Monday, July 20th, 2009

Here’s an interesting 95 jungle EP I found which isn’t listed discogs or rolldabeats. It’s on the US label Radikal Records, which put out some US pressings of a number of great rave records (as well as some no-so-great ones). The main track on this EP is a reggae tune featuring a Japanese singer named Sayoko along with Beenie Man & Mouse. There are 3 different jungle mixes on this EP: “Baron’s Carribean Jungle mix” , “Dub Massive Jungle Version” and “Doc’s Allen Street Jungle Mix”. All 3 of these were made by Doc Baron, an (I’m guessing) american producer who did a bunch of house remixes on Radikal. The second 2 remixes are very similar… so similar that I had to A/B them to tell the difference. The first remix is definitely the standout for me, with repetitive but unique sounding beats. The other 2 mixes are regular amen mash up stuff: not bad, but let down by the production a bit.

No discogs link since it’s not on there yet (I’ll try to add it soon), anyone looking for more info can click the record image for a higher res scan I found on a Japanese auction site. Apologies for the rip quality, my main mixer is still at a loft I DJ’d at over the weekend, so I ripped this using my old not-as-good setup (belt drive direct into a phono->USB box)

Capone – Massive

Here’s an alltime jungle anthem by some dude named DILLINJA… maybe you’ve heard of him??? I lost this record sometime while I was in college but managed to rebuy it a few years later. It’s the first release for Hardleaders and I can’t imagine a stronger start for a label. All the sample elements are totally standard for 95: amen + think break + time stretched ragga vocal. Instead, it’s the sequencing that makes it completely epic and an absolutely essential record. It’s since been repressed so it should be easy to find… so go grab a copy!

Law & Auder – It’s Alright

Another record unearthed in a giant pile of bargain bin stuff at some UK shop a few years back, I was expecting this to be more 93 style. Instead, it’s a nice 95 amen smasher with both terrorist and dred bass, frequently changing beats, and some choice vocal bits.
