Naz AKA Naz – Organised Crime (Killer + Eye Spy mixes)

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

I’ve already posted plenty about 786/Deja Vu, but here’s two belters which I haven’t yet mentioned. “Organised Crime” was a large track perhaps on par with Naz AKA Naz’s other big tune “Started Again”… both of these were featured on comps back in the day, with “organised crime” being on one volume of Kickin’s Hardcore Leaders series. While the original (a-side) mix is good, it’s this B-side remix which really does it for me: massive “Runs house” break (ala Blame’s “music takes you”), a blissful breakdown which drops the Godfather sample “I thought I was out… they pulled me back in!”, before pulling you back into mega-technoid-rave-synth madness.

The Eye Spy remix is on a separate EP, and seems to take no small influence from Acen’s “Trip to the Moon Pt 3″, both with common samples (ala the Jungle Pirate “Mutiny on the Bounty” track mentioned recently, except in this case it’s the acapella bit from Erik B & Rakim’s “Let The Rhythm Hit Em”) and with the little melody at 2:27 which mimics both the original “ttm3″ melody as well as the melody modulation in that track. None of these similarities are a big deal though, at least for me they doesn’t detract from the remix in the slightest.

Here’s the original TTM3 so you can decide whether I’m reading too much into these similarities or not:

Doctor In the Tardis

Here’s a few Doctor Who related tunes. First up is a track by Kay 9 aka Blame of “Music Takes You” fame. While most early Blame tracks were anthemy melodic endeavors, Kay 9 was sort of Blame’s more raw jungle/hardcore alias. Aside from the Doctor Who theme, “Who’s in the House?” also samples the intro to the Outer Limits, plus the melody from Coldcut “Doctor In the House”.

Kay 9 – Who’s In The House?

This second track is a 786/Deja Vu Records take on the same theme song. Not much to say about it, I was a bit let down that it doesn’t have much of that 786/Deja Vu grit to it, but it’s still a decent tune.

Boomtown – Doctor

Not oldskool hardcore/jungle, but here’s two other Dr. Who related tracks which popped in my mind. First, this KLF-related track which I’ll admit I’m not much of a fan of:

Second, Abelcain aka Davros’s concept album about Doctor Who’s “Key to Time” series of episodes.

Davros – The Ribos Operation

This breakcore album is almost “oldschool” by now since it was released in 2001 but some of the songs were written quite a while before that if I remember right (probably the late 90’s). Either way, this is great stuff and the (unfortunately CD-only) album is limited to 100 copies.

Recall – King of Rock

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

A friend borrowed my turntable needles so I haven’t been able to rip vinyl for the past few days. Therefore, here’s a track off a CD compilation. Incidentally, this comp also features the last track I posted (Raving Mad – Adrenaline), though it’s cut a minute or two short on there. This track is also 786/Deja Vu related, by Recall aka David Hope of Driller Killer EP fame. I’m pretty sure “King of Rock” was only ever released on this compilation, which is unfortunate since the vinyl version of this comp has 6 tracks per side. On the plus side, this track is at least featured in its entirety, while most other songs on the comp fade out after 4 minutes or so.

The other Recall stuff I have is from 91, but this is definitely more of a 92 tune – lots of hip hop samples, hot pants + runs house breaks trading off with 4/4 beats, not to mention gloriously grimey production ala the other 786/deja vu stuff. It’s heavily repetitive and total rave riff salad, but if either of those facts bug you then you probably already hate this website.

Raving Mad – Adrenaline (Remix)

I’ve had this tune stuck in my head for a while now… I’m pretty sure I didn’t even like it that much the first few times I heard it, but between the piano part and the “we’re gonna rock you” chant, it’s definitely wormed its way into my brain.

Krazy Kidz – Volume 1

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Here’s another one of the underrated tracks on 786 Records/Deja Vu. I believe this tune is produced by Dream, who (as somebody pointed out in the comments on this blog) also did the great “Power of Darkness” tune which I have yet to score. This track takes about a minute and a half to get going, but is definitely enjoyable when fully kicked in… big anthemic synth parts that somewhat belie the year it was produced (though I guess there were still a number of big anthem-y rave jams like this being done at the time). Information is, as usual with these more obscure releases, limited… hopefully one day I can track down Naz Khan or David Hope and get to the bottom of these great 786/Deja Vu releases.

Tranquil – You Got It

HOW GOOD is 786 / DEJA VU RECORDS?!!!! You can keep your “Sweet Harmony” and “Don’t Go”. That stuff is OK, but when push comes to shove I’ll always choose crazy distorted rage music requiring 2 showers after each listen, like this tune and the others on 786/Deja Vu.

Speaking of which… If anyone can put me in touch w/ Naz Khan (Naz aka Naz) or David Hope, please drop me a line at . I’d love to do an interview w/ one or both of them.

Deja Vu / 786 Recordings

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

Two of my favorite 90-92 labels which not many people seem to care about are Deja Vu and its affiliate label 786 Recordings. In particular, releases by Naz Khan and David Hope under various names/combinations: Naz Aka Naz, Recall, Mind of Kane, Dread, etc.

One thing which makes these labels so fun is that, for the most part, the earlier records in their catalog can be picked up for peanuts on discogs/ebay. Listening back to the tunes now, it’s understandable why they might not be everyone’s cup of tea: buzzing and distorted synths, frantic harsh sounds without much in the way of catchy pianos or anything happy. However, given that a lot of popular dance music has moved in that direction (distorted portamento synths being the new “rock guitar”), I’m suprised we haven’t seen more of an interest in some of these tunes.

Here’s a few of my favorites:

Mind of Kane – Stabbed In The Back

Absolutely great track – frantic beats, nasty bass and synth work. The track starts off heavy enough, but just wait until the super distorted synth drops in at 1 min…

Dread – Quantum Leap (b)

Dread – Quantum Leap (a)

This is a really fun single. On the B side, you get an absolutely smashing classic mentasm-sampling tune, suitable for playing alongside any big 91 style tunes. On the A side, you get a really strange/ crazy sounding track which borders on experimental music. At one point in the tune (1:38), the synth lead breaks down into some ridiculous fast portamento thing that sounds like the synths jumping off the keyboard and running down the street naked and screaming. Not a track I would rush to play out, but certainly an interesting and cool tune.

M.U.M. – The Water Paradox

Another nice single with buzzing synths, heavy breaks, etc. Also, another EP that goes for peanuts. Discogs doesn’t have any artist info for MUM (Mass Underground Movement), and my record doesn’t say anything since it’s a white label… but based on its similarity, I’d bet this was probably the work of either Naz Khan or David Hope.
