Hyper-On Experience official facebook page / soundcloud

Wednesday, May 1st, 2013

I was really excited to see today that Alex Banks of E-Z Rollers has set up an official HYPER-ON EXPERIENCE facebook page, which already has some great stories about the history of the group. There’s also an official soundcloud page now too!

If go check the earliest posts on this blog, you know these guys were 100% my favorite oldskool act ever no questions asked. I remember finding a copy of the “Lords of the Null Lines” remix 10″ around ’99/2000, and being totally blown away (obviously everyone knows and loves the the FP remix, the kaotic chemistry remix is top as well though!). Seriously don’t try to even talk to me about this group unless you want to hear the insane jabberings of a sad nerd because I will go on and on and on. Instead, just check these links:

RIP John Aymer (Reel 2 Reel Records)

Sunday, January 20th, 2013

Just heard really unfortunate news that John Aymer, brother of Cool Hand Flex and Mike De Underground, has passed away.
From Lennie De Ice’s facebook:

My Condolences to John(Aka The Brutha Man,The Original Suddem Impact ,ReeL2Reel,G-String Productions,Long Jon) Amyer’s Family.
This Man had a vision & Even brought Ragga Jungle to Carnival in 1993 in the Park …one of the 1st to show the mass what was going on instigator of the Early format of Jungle break beat / WASCID (tHE REST OF THE CREW WAS CoolhandFlex , Uncle22 ) Game of Love by Sudden Impact/ Karma Records, the History

Big respect to the John and condolences to his family… aside from the ragga jungle connection mentioned above, Reel 2 Reel was quite a cool label full of some choice lesser known grimey hardcore. He and his 2 brothers are three of the most underrated producers in oldskool in my opinion, possibly due to not releasing all that much material on the “biggest name” 91-95 labels, though they put out a staggering number of tunes and were involved from the very earliest days. Rest in Peace man…

Merry X-Mas!

Some nice presents coming your way, in the form of a bunch of different releases being posted today… be sure to look out for updates throughout the day on Twitter or Facebook as more tracks go up!

Stevie Hyper-D documentary on Rinse FM (the Uncle Dugs show) this Friday

Tuesday, October 16th, 2012

Not sure how much I’ve mentioned it before on here, but it’s no secret I’m a big fan of the Uncle Dugs show. Formerly station manager of Rinse FM, Dugs now runs a oldskool radio show every Friday morning on Rinse that’s been doing a lot to both bring back and create new interest in oldskool music. Combining loads of classic tracks from the 89-96 era (usually one year per episode, and all spun on vinyl) with a radio persona that’s sort of pirate radio mc meets shouty fishmonger, Dugs’ excitement for the tracks he plays spills out over the airwaves and goes a long way towards helping a broad audience understand why these tunes still matter 20+ years after the fact. Add in great on-air interviews and specials like this one, and you’ve got a radio show not to be missed (even if you have to check it on the podcast archives due to timezone differences)

This Friday, Dugs will be featuring an exclusive Stevie Hyper D audio documentary ‘Junglist Soldier’. For those who don’t know (and who didn’t see the post earlier in the year), Stevie Hyper D is considered one of the most important jungle mcs ever, and sadly passed away back in 1998 long before his time. There’s been some tribute events and even a posthumous compilation LP, but as far as I know, this is the first documentary on him ever. It’s airing exclusively on the Uncle Dugs show this Friday, 11am-2pm GMT, streaming at http://rinse.fm or on 106.8FM if you’re in London.

From Dugs….

This documentary has been put together by Matt at Audio Compound with help from Stevie’s nephew Darrell and features the full story of Stevie’s life and career.. The documentary has the full blessing of the family and with nephew Darrells input has been able to seek out interviews with some real key people from Stevie’s life and career from both family circles and musical circles.. As well as telling the story of Stevies life through narration and interviews you can also hear exclusive clips of Hyper D at work from the sound system era right through to acid house times into the rave world where most of us ending up finding out about him..

Friday 19th October will be known as #StevieHyperDDay on twitter so please tell a friend to tell a friend and let’s see if we can get this trending for the world see..

Check out the trailer for the Junglist Soldier audio documentary here:
You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video

And be sure to join the Facebook event and share it with friends

And if you haven’t checked his show yet, Get to the rinse archives and start clicking the circles that say “Uncle Dugs”

Last minute DJ set tonight in Montreal

Sunday, September 2nd, 2012

Last radio show was fun!! I’ll be posting it up on monday when I get back from this trip… speaking of which, I’m randomly on a super last minute trip to Montreal today with my buddies @LILINTERNET and POLStyle, and all 3 of us are playing a show tonight at Salon Officiel. No idea about the crowd/what type of party it is, I’ll probably play some oldskool or bboy electro stuff.

UPDATE: Here’s the facebook event:

Awesome rave parties near me that none of you care about since you all live in the UK or Europe

Friday, July 13th, 2012

Hey, I’m doing a party in Boston with my old dj crew:

It’s going to be a kind of “post-party” to the massive NASA reunion going on in New York the Saturday before, featuring 808 state, n-joi, mark, fierce ruling diva etc:

There’s also a sick techno party going on that Saturday the 21st for anyone in Boston who can’t make it to new york: ADAM X playing a 4 hour set in Boston:

Altern-8 one in Boston gonna be super fun, not a strict oldskool party since my crew is kind of known for varied sets but I’ll definitely throw some proper anorak oldskool stuff in there (and Mark is playing an all 92-93 breakbeat hardcore set). I’m also curating a “best of” oldskool amiga demos thing, which our buddy is going to be VJ’ing using custom processing/webgl/html5 web based vj tools (??!! I don’t even understand but guess I will when I see it used live!). So if you liked that Jesus on E’s video, prepare for some frantic clips of those chopped up throughout the night.

Blog to the Oldskool Radio this Wednesday

Monday, May 21st, 2012

It’s almost that time again… this Wednesday is another installment of the blog to the oldskool radio show on jungletrain.net. Wednesday night, 7-9:30pm EST, midnight-2:30am UK, 1am-3:30am GMT.

This session is going to be a full 91-95 era session, starting slow, speeding up along the way. It’s also going to feature almost entirely stuff off the blog (last show was fun but had NO tracks from the blog). This means anything you like in the stream, you can download right off the blog and listen to on its own / get full info on easily.

This might be helpful for people who haven’t dug through the entirety of the archive, which could take a while since there’s close to 700 releases there. However, for those who think they’re pretty up to date and have thoroughly rinsed my blog’s back-catalog of posts, there’s still good reason to tune in… .. I’m going ahead and ripping the next 5-6 tracks to be posted on the blog over the next few weeks. During the show, I’m going to not only be playing these, but I’ll also be pasting secret links to the tracks into the chat window, so you get them before anyone else.

Since I know some people can’t tune in because of time zone differences / real life getting in the way, there’s another way to get these tracks – follow @blog2oldskool on twitter, and retweet my post about the radio show which I’ll be posting earlier wednesday. Once you do this, I’ll DM you with the links after the show airs.

Maybe this is a bit of a cheap ploy, but the site gets very few reshares and retweets (especially about the radio show), so rather than just continue whinging on here, figure I’d give a nice little incentive to spread the word.

Jungletrain radio show 4/25/2012 – mp3 and tracklist

Thursday, April 26th, 2012

Here’s a recording of the full 2.5 hour jungletrain radio show last night, April 25th 2012. All in all, I was very happy with how this show went – I spent more time before the show picking stuff instead of just mixing whatever happened to be in the crates nearest my turntables, which I think paid off. The show started with stabby 92 hardcore, uplifting but nothing too happy or cheesy. After a while, it moves into more deep and dark tracks, toggling back and forth a bit while getting darker and darker. There’s a bit of a diversion through tracks from the blog, until finally around 1:41 that happy hardcore set I warned about touches down… starting with classic oldskool (SMD1), moving up through a lot of my favorite tracks through about 1998. No tracklist for this part since I’ll probably rerecord this with more tunes as an official mix sometime soon. Finally, I had a bit of extra time so by request I chucked in a couple dutch gabber tracks and 2 classic german tunes.

Thanks for those who tuned in, the number of people checking it live and RTing / resharing the info could still be a lot better though. I’m not sure what I can do to remind people about this radio show, thinking of making an email list but for now the easiest way to remember (aside from just knowing it’s every other Wednesday) is to join the facebook group listed on the right, or follow the twitter account @blog2oldskool. I try to really not spam too much but I give a notices a day or two before, day of, and then right when the show is starting.. as well as posting random other stuff of interest.

Selling records tommorow (Apr 7th) at Boston TOGETHER record fair

Friday, April 6th, 2012

Oops, I forgot to post about this earlier… no big deal since there’s not many Boston people who read this anyway, but worth a shot… I’m going to be selling records at the Together Music Festival tommorow. I’ll definitely have some oldskool there (mainly doubles, etc), but also lots of assorted house, dance, whatever. Lots and lots of $1 or $2 stuff great for sampling (the reason I bought it to begin with), maybe even free if you buy something else. There’s definitely going to be some gems hidden though, not just throwaway stuff.

Fixing Old Rips…

Sunday, February 26th, 2012

I went through some of the old tracks I’ve posted which had digital clipping today and re-ripped them.
feel free to re-grab these if the clicks n pops were bugging you.. there still may be some but now they’re all of the worn record variety and not the incorrect 0s and 1s type…

most importantly, if there’s any others which have obvious digital noise / clicks, please let me know in a comment below and I’ll correct them.
The Dub Technicians – Analogue Pressure
Redshift + Sweat & Groove II
Cyanide 45- Notice Me
Action Man Sleeping Lion
