The Minister So Sinister – Battlestar Hardcore EP

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Here’s a wicked single by Julian Cobb (aka Hellfish, Minister So Sinister, Undercover Elephant, Zookeeper’s Revenge and a bunch of other aliases), released on the Bogwoppa label in 92. The title track samples the “Battlestar Galactica” theme, coupling it with a nasty amen which might be the The Chuck’s Beats / Slowjam amen… it’s hard to tell for certain since it’s low fi + crunched to hell, but it has the low end of that version of the break. Track B1 is suprisingly straightforward for Bogwoppa stuff, but an excellent track nonetheless. 2 other electro-influenced hardcore jams round out this EP.

Dawn Penn & Bounty Killer – You Don’t Love Me (No, No, No) (Reel II Reel Jungle remix)

Monday, April 27th, 2009

I’m still in the process of unpacking boxes from my move, yesterday night I was unpacking my CDs and found this 94 ragga jungle comp. The comp is pretty good, I mean it’s a cheapo TELSTAR comp and and all, and there’s a track or two which are obviously mastered from vinyl (surface noise and all), but there’s plenty of serious tunes on there. One track which caught my ear last night is this Greensleeves jungle track – produced by Reel II Reel of De Underground recordings.

Do Want: Disciples Of The Watch EP

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

Just heard about this on B2VOS, checked the track snippets and really like it, but it seems MEGA obscure… if anyone can help point me to a copy (sale/trade), please email me at the address listed on the right.

Intellect – Stimulation

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

Today’s track is on the often overlooked Boogie Beat label, which put out a slew of releases including a couple of gems. Aside from producing a few nice EPs on the label, Ben Intellect (aka Intellect) also engineered a huge amount of Boogie Beat’s other releases.

Mixrace & Proton Iso-Space – Kings

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

Here’s an underrated EP written some of my all-time favorite jungle producers: Mixrace (Dev Paradox & DJ Trax) and Hyper-on Experience . With that kind of talent you can guess the quality of the beats, and this single doesn’t dissapoint. This track is a bit more recent (96), so the music is a bit more stripped down than earlier productions by these acts, but the beats more than make up for it. Mixrace + Proton Iso-space also collaborated on The Endless Skies EP, which I like maybe even more than this EP and may post a track from some time in the future. Also, Dave Trax used to scratch as part of the Hyper-on Experience live PA.

Also, this is another bare cheap EP… I nabbed a second copy for 1 GBP last time I was in the UK.

Digital Pressure – Watch Dis Space

Sunday, April 19th, 2009

I’m back! still getting stuff sorted in my new place, but intronets is on and I have a stack of records staring at me dying to be listened to / ripped. Speaking of which… If anyone has any suggestions how to best dampen vibrations under a crappy belt drive turntable, I now have a separate old setup just for rips, but can’t type or do anything while playing records or else they skip (all metal + glass table = super unforgiving). You can hear it a bit on this rip, but these aren’t meant to be perfect rips to replace the records so I’m going to leave it as is for now.

Anyway, here’s a track somebody mentioned a while ago in the comments, which was by a group I’d been meaning to check out for ages.. SDR & Subsonic. These guys have done a TON of 93-95 jungle singles which I’d seen around but never heard, so I finally nabbed their juice box EP when I happened to find it for cheap… and I’m glad I did. This single has 3 amen workouts, all dark choppy stuff with reversed and filtered bits. My favorite track is the A side – it features the same “no sound effect” vocal sample used in Nebula II – Xplore-H-Core, plus an absolutely massive twisted up rave synth that drops 2 mins in.

Hardcore Rhythm Team – Raggaclash

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

I’m a big fan of those ’93-’95 ragga jungle cash in tunes made by producers who knew nothing about jungle – resulting in that ramshackle ‘crack jungle’ sound exemplified by tunes like this and LPs like this, but today’s offering features something else entirely – rave producers trying to imitate ragga!

The tune opens with an attempt to conjure up a rural scene (via the theme from Emmerdale) with a bit of dialogue from a raver looking for tickets to ‘The rave down the farm‘, but even though ’92 was the peak year for illegal raves, things seem to have changed – as the unintentionally hilarious pastiche patois response points out – ‘No mon, we’re going to the ragga rave‘… cue a bad impression of the Sleng Teng bassline and some slapdash (and surprisingly slow) breakbeats.

There’s plenty of other incongruous little touches here – the out of tune stabs, the very un-ragga ‘Rockin’ in a ragga style‘ vocal, those weird gaps at the start of the breakdowns that throw the whole tune out of kilter… the overall effect sounds like a bunch of monged out rave producers given 5 minutes with an Atari ST in an attempt to make a ‘ragga’ tune and cash in on the latest trend – and yet there’s a certain innocent charm about this mawkish effort, its just so wrong in every way that you can’t help but admire it’s hodgepodge lunacy.

I don’t know much about the Hardcore Rhythm Team (an unfortunate choice of acronym), and this is one of those £1.99 tunes that I picked up in an auction years ago to justify postage for some other winnings – purely on the strength of the title and cover. Apparently it was also released as white label on Badboy records with the deleted ‘One Love’ on the flip. Furious records had a few releases in a similar vein, none of which I have, though it might be interesting to hear how their twisted version of ragga-rave progressed…

DJ Massive – Massive Overload (last post for a week)

Saturday, April 11th, 2009

I’m about to move, won’t have internet for most of the week and might not be set up to rip tracks for a while after that.. In the meantime, here’s an awesome track to tide you over. It’s by one of my favorite prolific-yet-underrated producers, DJ Massive. Slick production (especially for 91), choice vocal snippets and synths, tasty bass, just a solid, well rounded hardcore tune. It was put out on a big label so it’s super cheap and easy to find, everyone should nab this one… enjoy, and see you in a week.

E.K.U.D.C.M. – Dub Plate Business 2

Friday, April 10th, 2009

I did a pretty lengthy post a while back on MC Duke, who did some great early hiphop on Music Of Life plus some excellent jungle tracks. Here’s one of the EPs I didn’t post, Dubplate Business Part 2. The other tracks on this EP don’t stand out that much, but this first track has some choice choppy beats and mad synths. This is a track I could imagine hearing in a mix and immediately wanting an ID for.

XTRO – Toys

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

As mentioned in a previous comment, here’s an obscure Juice Box Records EP that I love, but which not many people have heard. This release was by David Campbell, who did tracks under countless aliases as well as engineering several Klute albums . “Toys” features a breakbeat track on side A (though it’s programmed in a more techno style), and 2 great almost proto-wonky techno tracks on the B side.

Just checked discogs and this seems to be going for pretty cheap, I remember paying a lot more for this EP when I finally tracked down a copy than this a few years ago… the tunes were well worth it though!
