Pure Science – Give a Little Darkness

Here’s a moody jungle number from 94. The artist behind this (Helen T / Pure Science) collaborated with DJ Nut Nut on a couple nice singles which are similarly dark, and also did quite a few jungle EPs on her own label IDM (Integrated Digital Music, not Intelligent Dance Music!). This tune isn’t exactly the craziest dark jungle anthem out there, but it’s nice, sparse and laid back, and a refreshing change of pace compared to some of the more full-on amen smashing darkcore anthems of the time. We get some effectively moody melody and pad sounds with think + sesame street break combo, plus timestretched apache (I think?) on the edit bar. During the second part of the track, some vocal samples get thrown on top which seem a bit unnecessary/random: “Bass!” (Public Enemy), “Baby there’s enough for everyone” (Coldcut), some ragga vocals etc. Probably could have done with one more dark pad or sample instead, but it definitely doesn’t ruin what’s otherwise a nice fun track.

Darkside heads take note: this is probably one of the lesser known of those kind of tunes (in a time now where that sound is back and people to seem to REALLY be mining the obscurities). So grab those $3-4 copies before more people find out about it!

  1. Very nice! Also, nice to see some laydees junglist reprasent! 🙂 I’d be interested to see what else is out there in terms of female hardcore/jungle producers…

  2. I thought this was the same Pure Science who worked with DJ Nut Nut (commonly known for that early ’94 12″ on Production House) but if you take a look at the label it reads: Produced and arranged by Nana & Phil. It turns out the Pure Science on that release is none other than Phivos Sebastiane a.k.a The Scientist from Kickin’ Records.

As for both this tune and the flip, greatness and a little known gem.
