Synchronome – Turn up The Strobe

Here’s a great single by Synchronome on the No Limit Label, which mostly released solid (if not amazing) wax by DJ Biz. The tracks on this EP are pretty fast and frantic for the time (near 170bpm), with lots of samples dropped in. The A side features some heavy cut up mentasms, but it’s the original mix on the B side that wins me over – 4-beat kick/hat mixed with breakbeats, filtered synths, bleeps as used in The Moog’s “Jungle Muffin”, plus some of the same ragga vocals which were also used on a previous No Limit track, DJ Biz’s Fatal Cut. There’s also a nice breakdown partway through, where the word “Rush!” (from Paula Abdul) is answered by Madonna: “… feels like flying!”

If you check the discogs listing, there’s a glowing comment on there about this EP, talking about how it maybe even helped to start happy hardcore. This IS a great EP no doubt (and especially worth nabbing as it can easily be found on the cheap, albeit not so much so now as in previous years), but that review should be taken with a grain of salt as it was written by the producer of this EP 🙂 Still, an excellent EP well worth picking up for fans of manic 92-93 obscurities.

Edit 2018/12/06 – Now for sale on bandcamp!! Left streaming link up but switched download link to go to bandcamp….

  1. Hi,

    Thanks for the right up.

The review on Discogs was taken from Warlocks column in a magazine I now cannot remember, I have the cutting, so its word for word.

    Cheers

    TM

  2. ah, cool, thanks for the info. Do you happen to remember where the ragga vocals in the track were from?
Also, any chance you have a spare copy of “The Pill Popper” you’d be willing to sell? 🙂

  3. Wow, that’s a tester. I think we tool it off a random floppy disc of samples that were floating around in the studio at the time.

Pill Popper is only on DAT, it needs to be trf on to disc if ever I find one somewhere lol.
