Obviously High – Mistery Tour EP

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

Here’s a nice EP by Andrew Wright aka The Moog, done in conjunction with a few other people. The A-Side is OK, but I prefer these B-side tracks. “Inside My Head” uses some classic video game sounds in conjunction with the classic “happiness is just around the bend” acapella, as posted about here. The 3rd track on the side, “Maelstrom”, has more video game sounds but with an even stranger sound. All in all, a nice somewhat overlooked EP, not to mention a good bang-for-the-buck at 5 tracks all of which are decent.

MC Jay J and Devious D – Sensational Jungalist

Monday, June 28th, 2010

Here’s a favorite of mine from the not-incorrectly-titled Awesome Records label run by Slipmatt and Lime. “Time of Our Lives” was maybe the bigger track on this, and was previously released on another EP with another favorite tune of mine, “Drive Ya Crazy”. However, “Sensational Jungalist” is my pick on this release – great ragga vocals which I’m sure Droid can fill us in on (General Levy?), rave synths, nice unusual breaks (Cold Sweat + some others I don’t know), some big horn samples which I think became more widely used after this track (circa 94-95). In general, lots of great “stuff” which changes up fairly regularly and easily holds your attention for the track’s four minutes.

Freddy Fuddpukker – Keep the Love Alive

Saturday, June 26th, 2010

Sorry for the delay in posting rips, been pretty busy lately. Trying to get going on these again though, so here’s a quality track to start things back up. Freddy Fudpukker is aka Cloud 9, who we all know for “Got me burnin’” and “Gonna be alright”. This tune isn’t as anthemy as those, instead combining off-kilter melodies with solid breaks accented by pitch shifted timpani hits. “Keep The Love Alive” was released on Symphony Sounds, known best for the Neuromancer – “Pennywise” EP + remixes, but who did plenty of other great EPs (which I somehow haven’t managed to post yet…doh!)

More Amiga Jungle

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

I should have mentioned, the previous clip came from the cool Chipflip blog I just found. They also did an article on Octamed Jungle which includes a youtube video posted by Mulder of the original drums for a classic Aphrodite tune which I’m sure most of you know. He’s also got a rough version of his Fatboy Slim remix posted, so check the original article for that.

Luke Vibert – Hardcore Hip Hop mix 88-92 (Extended version)

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

I don’t know how many of you heard Luke Vibert’s UK Hardcore Hiphop 88-92 mix that Planet Mu Records posted a couple months ago, but it’s a great mix full of lots of britcore faves – tracks by Silver Bullet, Gunshot, Blade, etc. Recently, Vibert dug up an extended version of this mix, and passed it to me with the OK to post on this site. Apparently the version posted on mixcloud was just a rough cut he wasn’t totally happy with. This is the final version of the mix which is 20 minutes longer, has better quality rips of the tunes and is higher bitrate than the original version. It’s a great mix, lots of wicked tunes from the well known to some proper obscure stuff I’m not sure if anyone will recognize.

The file for this is pretty large (>200 megs), so I’ll try to post another copy transcoded down to 128kb tomorrow.

With the original mix posted by planet mu, there was supposed to be a prize for the first person who could identify all the tracks in it. I’m not sure if anyone managed to do this the first time around, so first person to do it with this extended mix should drop me an email at and me or Luke will sort you out with a prize. Enjoy!

Bill & Ted – Feel That Groove

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

Here’s a jungle single which seems pretty rare: right now I’m the only person listed as having it on discogs. I don’t know much about it, other than the artist behind it did one more single on the same label. The vocals and music are both a bit corny, but it’s got nice layered breaks and it’s gotten accidentally stuck in my head a few times now (hence my posting it here). The EP sounds like it was made some time between 1993 and 1995, hard to say for certain though.

Liquid Aliens – Are You Sure We’ll Be OK?

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

Liquid Wax is a relatively underrated labell in my opinion. Everyone knows “never try the hippodrome” (at least I hope they do), but a lot of their later tracks are relatively obscure. I guess it makes sense since most of these later tracks aren’t as “anthemy” as hippodrome, but they are great very well produced tracks nonetheless, a lot of which definitely grow on you after repeat listens. Case in point – this EP, which is one of the pricier of the liquid wax EPs. It’s a solid amen track, no aspects that really stand out immediately other than the absolutely filthy bass ala Tango + Ratty. However, listening to this in mixes (especially the Micky Finn “getting thin w/ the finn vol 2″ which is one of my favorites), it really grew on me over time. I managed to pick this up in a Baltimore bargain bin a couple of weeks ago, so my score is now yours for the downloading :)

Nicolette – Wicked Mathematics (Instrumental)

Friday, June 4th, 2010

Here’s a single I see for sale pretty much constantly but never cared for… this is mostly due to the vocals on the A side which I absolutely can’t stand. However, I found it yet again last weekend, and decided to give the b side a listen – without the singing on top, this track is actually pretty cool!! Definitely really strange sounding/interesting, which these days is just as important to me as overall tune quality. I’m not claiming this is going to be everyone’s favorite track, but give it a shot if you like weirder tunes. If you do like it, you can nab a copy for less than a cup of coffee (currently 75p on discogs)
