Global – Rock Steady

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

Here’s possibly the best 92 oldschool track made in the US… one of those super simple and straight-ahead tunes that gets stuck in your head the first time you listen to it. It comes from one of the Metropolis Remix service records, a series of promo-only releases that mainly contain domestic edits and remixes of many classic UK hardcore and techno tunes. The producers responsible here, Robert Vaughan and Josh Kay, used to work at a store called Oak Lawn Records. According to at least one person I talked to, these guys were supposed to have a release on Moving Shadow, but it fell through for some reason or another. Gotta love the little diced break segue at 1:21!

DJ AKA – Farside

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Here’s one of my favorite 93 tracks… moody hardcore/jungle with tasteful orchestra stabs, brooding soundtrack ambience and fantastic sharp choppy drums layered perfectly by Pete Parsons. There’s a breakdown halfway through where you can practically hear the more euphoric 92 sounds of hardcore melting away into 94 darkside, as the classic “rush!” and “do it now!” vocal samples are answered to with a monstrous “no!!!!”. Excellent stuff, no idea why this single isn’t more appreciated..

Does anyone know what that main snappy break is called / where it’s from? I think i’ve heard it in a few other tracks.

Plastic Clothes Mechanics (Pre-Hyper-On Experience/EZ Rollers)

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

Here’s an interesting tune of historical note… I believe it was the first released single by Alex and Jay of EZ Rollers (of which Alex was 1/2 of Hyper-On Experience). It dates back to 1990… that’s not just some made-up date on discogs, the record actually says “copyright 1990″ on it. You can hear it in the track as the production is pretty rough, but still, it’s fun to hear where these guys started from.

Formula 7 – Throwback

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

Here’s a nice Bizzy B engineered number I rescued from a bargain bin 2 weeks ago… Formula 7 put out some quality singles like “Time Stretch The Bass” and “Not Just Ragga”. This one has the standard Bizzy-engineered break craziness.

Menace Makes 3 – Do You Feel What I’m Feelin

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

Massive piano anthem here. There’s a great remix on this EP by Matrix Rise (heavily underrated act on Mutant Records), but the original wins out.

Blapps Posse – Bust It (Time To Get Busy)

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

A while back I posted a link to Turntable Symphony – Instructions of Life. Here’s another track by the same artist (Jason from Freestylers), off an EP from 1990. It’s a great tune, and was heavily sampled in Sonic Experience – Protien among other tracks.

DJing @ BASSTOWN in Boston Saturday Jan 28th

Friday, February 20th, 2009

Just a note that I’m spinning at the Boston electronic bi-weekly BASSTOWN next Saturday. They’ve asked me to vary my set up, so it won’t be all oldschool. Instead I am going to largely be dropping some newer stuff which is congruent with, but not identical to, what normally gets played at BASSTOWN… sort of my favorite underrated bits of that stuff plus some older classic dance tracks I think anyone could appreciate. I’ll definitely be sneaking it back to real oldskool when I get a chance, depending on crowd response.

The DJs at Basstown are easily some of the best and most solid DJs in Boston. Volvox is a killer minimal DJ and staunch (earlier) oldskool fan. Die Young is a highly skilled DJ that also made thousands of Boston residents lose their friggin minds last New Year’s Eve. Morgan Louis (not a Basstown resident but also playing that night) is wicked and plays some unexpected gems…he also played that New Year’s eve party.

Holy Ghost aka Ouija Board – Spirit Player EP

Friday, February 20th, 2009

Here’s a nice EP I got in the UK last weekend. Holy Ghost are most well known for “Nice One Boy”, a 92 track which inexplicably made it big (music video on MTV) despite having a deep, dark and dreary vibe lightyears away from the euphoric hardcore which was comercially successful at the time.
WOEBOT already did a good article on Holy Ghost here, not much more I can add to that.

EOAD – Love The Feeling

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

US crew might know this track from the second “Speed Limit” comp on Moonshine. It’s one of those Ibiza Recs tracks that combines straightahead melodic female vocals with their own weird Ibiza Recs sounds, a mixture which is always enjoyable for me. Another find from a UK bargain bin last weekend…

Princess Of The Posse

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

One of the lesser known aliases on Labello Blanco, Princess of the Posse put out two great singles plus a few comp tracks. It appears that POTP was actually Bug Khan, of “Made In Two Minutes” and “Go Down Baby” fame.

The first EP has a bit more hardcore influence, including a a great overly dramatic intro that seems to go on forever (especially when mixing the tune if you’re trying to fast-forward to the main synth part), plus a wonderfully craptacular guitar sample that always reminds me of the video game NARC and makes me smile when I hear it in old tracks.

This second EP is a year later and thus has even choppier, more outright jungley beats, ragga vibes and heavier more pronounced sub bass.
