House of Brakes (Ed DMX) – The Arnos Groove

Monday, March 30th, 2009

Here’s a “new oldschool” gem from 2002 which I think a lot of people missed out on. I actually had no idea about it until my friend Ed (not Ed DMX, another Ed) sent me this mp3… It’s by Ed DMX, who aside from doing massive amounts of lurvely electro-ey stuff as DMX Krew has down several wicked throwback hardcore EP … specifically Asylum Seekers – Hardcore House and this Chester Louis III single (the latter of which is maybe more early electro/house style but definitely has some proto-hardcore vibes to it). All of these singles have just the right amount of authenticity / retro to them, without it interfering with the music or coming off as some sort of crass recreational experiment.. wicked tunage which would be enjoyable no matter what year it was released.

In the case of this track, you’ve got slightly more modern sounding bass coupled with quality oldskool breaks and the “it’s partytime tonight” vocals from Todd Terry “Weekend” (or whatever disco song was sampled in that track). Points for the track title too, I can’t look at a tube map now without remembering this song.

DJ Spice – Brand New (Stressed Out Mix)

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

Another day, another “why the hell is this amazing single selling for 3 POUNDS?!!!” EP, this time by DJ Spice. Soapbar put out some amazing EPs (as the DJ Aka I posted a while back shows), and this one is no exception. Total 93 ragga jungle/hardcore business with plenty of choice vocal samples and solid choppy beats. DJ Spice’s later 10″EP on Soapbar and Hardcore Vinyl EP under the name D’Influence are also excellent and well worth rounding up.
rip is pretty noisy since my needles are kind of destroyed.. original tune sounds mint though, go grab a copy!

DJ Distroi & Boykz – Jungle Warrior

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

Here’s a great EP that’s nowhere near as appreciated as it should be. Both sides of this are equally excellent. The B side was featured on Hard Leaders III, but the A side wins out for me with its trip 2 the moon break and vicious synth lines. Distroi & Boykz did some great releases, and DJ Distroi was also responsible for the unquestionably classic Alphawave EP

Edrush – Edrush

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

Here’s a record I bought thinking it was by Ed Rush (of No U Turn / Virus fame, or “Bludclot Artattack” / “I wanna stay in the jungle” fame if you know your old jams)…. instead, it appears to be by some producer writing tracks under the name “Karl Marx”. So unless Ed Rush released a couple of 94 happy hardcore records under that alias on a label called Primavera Recordings, this record probably isn’t by him. Still, it’s a good enough 92 tune, pretty simple and more akin to something from 91. Pretty common samples: Sinammon “Need You Know” acapella (as used in “Far Out” and countless other tunes), the NWAmen (sampled from “Straight Outta Compton”), melody as sampled in one of my favorite bare-cheap ibiza tunes Urban Distress – “No Skank” (probably will post that tommorow), plus some ridiculous breakdown sample.

The Launch E.P.

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

Here’s an EP which appears to be a comp, but which I think was actually made by EOAD (Ecstacy on a Dream, of Ibiza Recs fame) using various artist names for the tracks. One of the producers is listed as Steve (Cut ‘Em Up) C, which may or may not be Steve C of Skeleton Recs. There’s no real facemelters on this EP but I really like this track… subtle use of the give it up turn it loose break, simple effective structure which builds up to the memorable vocal & piano part.
The vocal on this track is from a 92 new jack swing (remember that stuff?) tune Teddy Riley feat Tammy Lucas – “Is it Good To You”. This track’s acapella was also sampled in the previously posted song Menace Makes 3 – “Feel What I’m Feeling”.

ISQ – Just a Little Bit of Hardcore

Friday, March 20th, 2009

Here’s a totally obscure track, likely overlooked because it’s the only breakbeat oriented track on an EP released on a non-breakbeat oriented label. This EP was released on the italian label HOT TRAX label, a sublabel of the amazing label ACV. Hot Trax put out some great EPs by Automatic Sound Unlimited (pre-D’Arcangelo) and 2 super low fi nasty Smiley Slayers speedcore eps, while their parent label ACV were responsible for some amazing releases by Leo Annibaldi and Robert Armani.

Sorry the rip is a bit noisy (didn’t bother to clean the record before ripping), the track is already pretty low fi and nasty though so it doesn’t detract too much.

Bay B Kane – Hyd & Seek

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

Everyone who reads this site should know about Bay B Kane: either by virtue of him being one of the top hardcore/jungle producers ever, or at the very least (for less informed people checking this), from reading the 3 part interview I posted on here a while back. This track is not as well known as his anthem “Hello Darkness” (though it’s on the remix EP for that tune), but it’s every bit as good. Eerie-but-not-cheesy synths meet the “assemby line” break run through the beat blender at “purée” setting, with top notch vocal snippet work on top. The “bad boy” samples come from the classic Hijack “Badman is Robbin” acapella, as well as a much less known KRS-One bit which is wicked.

As far as 93 tracks go, this is one of my all-time favorites. As this site proves, that’s saying a lot.

The X Men – My Sound Rule EP

Monday, March 16th, 2009

Here’s a great ragga jungle track from 1994. Hyper Records put out a few nice early records, including a couple by DJ Panik and the Freaky (together and separately) which I like a lot. Unlike a lot of labels which fizzled out earlier, Hyper Records kept going from 91 all the way up through 2000. I found this out the hard way when I recently dug up one of their records in the basement of the Soho MVE, with no artist info… just the hyper records logo. Thinking I scored one of their early gems, I brought it home, put it on the turntable and… it turned out to be a Clipz record :(
