Secret Squirrel – Comming On Dark

Tuesday, December 27th, 2011

Last of my Florida posts.. hope everyone had a good X-mas & Boxing Day! This Secret Squirrel (aka Julian Hellfish) tune is great, sort of a revamp of the Mu Venom/DDT EP, with much beefier layered breaks in a 93 style (crazy time streching/pitch shifting). It’s actually pretty simple like the original, a dutch sounding rave synth makes a brief appearance but mostly it’s the original vocal samples and those crazy timestretched breaks.. more than enough for me though!

The Beat Mash Crew – Favorite Cuts

Monday, October 11th, 2010

Here’s a track to contrast “In Complete Darkness” which I posted a few days ago… not much in the way of big catchy melodies here, just great mad choppy breaks and sparse samples dropped on top. The scratching bit should sound familiar, as it’s the intro to Tango’s absolutely massive / essential / massively essential “Grand National” remix, which consists of someone scratching with the Hijack “Badman is Robbin” acapella.

Engineering duties on this track are by the great Julian Hellfish/Secret Squirrel/Undercover Elephant, who I’m still waiting on some interview answers from. I had actually forgotten I even owned this until I heard someone spin it recently… I think it was maybe DJ Foo? Whoever it was, thanks for the reminder, as this EP is back out in my “to play” crates now :)

Acid Beard Massive – Cheeky Rush EP

Monday, August 10th, 2009

Here’s a nice EP by Julian Cobb aka Hellfish, Secret Squirrel, Minister-so-Sinister, Undercover Elephant, and many others. You’ve got to love 4 track EPs where each track is good, and this is definitely one of those EPs. The tunes on “Cheeky Rush” range from borderline happy hardcore (“Sweetest Feeling”), to more straightahead, slightly dark hardcore/jungle (“Quantum Leap”). It’s pretty amazing how many quality tunes this guy churned out in the oldskool era, and he continues to do some wicked current hardcore stuff. Check his new stuff, go see him live, and remind about his interview for this site – I’d go do it myself but I’m on the wrong continent.

The Minister So Sinister – Battlestar Hardcore EP

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Here’s a wicked single by Julian Cobb (aka Hellfish, Minister So Sinister, Undercover Elephant, Zookeeper’s Revenge and a bunch of other aliases), released on the Bogwoppa label in 92. The title track samples the “Battlestar Galactica” theme, coupling it with a nasty amen which might be the The Chuck’s Beats / Slowjam amen… it’s hard to tell for certain since it’s low fi + crunched to hell, but it has the low end of that version of the break. Track B1 is suprisingly straightforward for Bogwoppa stuff, but an excellent track nonetheless. 2 other electro-influenced hardcore jams round out this EP.
