Gang Related And Mask – Tear It Up

Normally this tune might have missed this website’s age cutoff by one year, but thanks to spinning Dara’s top notch 96 mix a bunch the past few days, I’m going to give it a pass. Here you have a wicked track by Gang Related and Mask, aka Roni Size and Krust of V Recordings fame. Anybody who’s been involved with DNB for a while will be familiar with these guys/ their label, so I’m going to skip introductions and let you google “Roni Size” on your own if you’re especially new to this music. Despite being from 1996, “Tear It Up” tune still has the frantic, heavily layered breaks (amen, think, humpty dump AND apache) popular in 94/95, with the only 96 signifiers for me being the hiphop intro and distorted bass. Though I guess guys like DJ Hype were using those elements back in 94/95 on ganja records too…
Aside from the crazy breaks, this is also a tune where it pays to keep listening through the second drop, as Krust + Roni really up the craziness for that last part. I actually had to record the record twice since those bass hits and amens started clipping. Most of these Dope Dragon releases were pressed in rather large quantities, so this record can be found easily and for cheap. Check the link below and nab yourself a copy!

(removed because dope dragon is a sublabel of full cycle which is still active)
