Intense – Time Space Continuum

Sorry for the lack of posts, I’ve been stuck with more audio ripping issues… digital clicks all over the place, both through a USB->audio preamp device (clicks whenever a reasonably loud signal goes through), and through a standard USB recording device (random digital clips). I *think* I’ve got it kicked now, using an old laptop which seems to handle audio a bit better… let me know if you hear any digital clicks in this rip though! (versus light surface noise + vinyl pops).

To make up for it, here’s a top favorite of all time – a wicked and bad tune by Intense aka Babylon Timewarp. This record (and this track in particular) are absolutely tip-top shelf jungle with moody pads, well layered breaks etc. “Time Space Continuum” is probably my favorite due to the melody and epic breakdown section taken from the movie “Army Of Darkness”. I’ve seen that movie a couple of times since getting this record, and every time now I have to rewind the scene featuring it to listen to that part again… secretly wishing the rest of this tune would kick in!

Intense did quite a few great records, starting with the Drowzee EP (“the tournament” is a longtime favorite), and continuing with this and the “Paradox” EP which are two of their better known early ones. They went on to do some more jazzy intelligent stuff on Good Looking, including some tracks with saxophone by (if I’m remembering correctly) one member’s dad? At least I think that was how the story went. Not as much my cup of tea as the harder earlier stuff, but some good tunes there nonetheless. Also, there was at least one later track I know of which harkens back to the darker, earlier sound: “Destruction”, off the Solar EP on GLR:

Pretty crazy this came out on GLR in the 00’s, huh? Definitely an underappreciated gem I remember playing nonstop when it came out.

More recently, Dan Duncan from Intense has been doing a minimal techno project called Pig And Dan which is quite popular (nice guy to boot!) Also, Sublogic issued a never-released tune by Intense two years ago, which is sort of a hybrid of the track I posted here and “paradox”. Unfortunately it’s out of print and seems to be going for a bit right now on discogs. Maybe Will has a copy or two kicking around though (I should probably check before posting this since I’m not sure if I ever bought that one!)
