In Depth Perception – Rhizome

If you ask an oldskool fan about their favorite Lucky Spin records, they’d probably rattle off some combo of releases by artists like DJ Crystl, Orca, Trace or any of the other big acts which released on there. Much less likely to be mentioned: this one-off 93 EP by In Depth Perception… for about as long as I’ve been buying oldskool, I’ve been seeing this release show up for cheap on websites, ebay, discogs and in record stores.. probably more so than any other Lucky Spin release I can think of. As of writing this, Discogs has 21 copies for sale including 7 in the states. IT’s also got a pretty low rating right now (3.4), indicating it’s definitely more of an “acquired taste”.

Despite this, I’ve always liked this EP quite a bit – it seems to mix well with plenty of more melodic tracks, has quality drumwork on both sides and is a great tune to contrast with more anthem-y stuff. The A side is nice as well, but better for mixing than home listening IMO. Maybe this isn’t the ultimate “must buy” oldskool anthem of all time, but it’s certainly a solid and enjoyable track, well worth the spare change in your pocket it’d likely cost to procure.
