Mole The Dipper – Eye of the Dinosaur + Remix

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

Here’s two of my personal favorites… when it comes to fast, crazy, choppy 92-94 hardcore/jungle, Mole The Dipper is one of the best. If I had to compare his tracks to anyone else, the closest I could get would be Bizzy B… however they definitely have their own sound. “Eye of the Dinosaur” is a monster of a tune: sick ultra-lowfi breaks that careen along at a hellishly fast pace, pitching up and down and with new layers coming in and dropping out… all culminating in some giant end-of-the-world orchestra stabs straight out of 91! The remix ups the ante by just chopping the hell out of EVERYTHING in site, not really adding any new elements but instead running the original through a blender.

Both of these releases go for nothing nowadays- plenty of copies for 5 pounds each or less in the case of the remix EP. If you like crazy fast choppy jungle, there’s really no excuses not to have these (as well as the other Mole The Dipper EPs)

MC Lethal – The Rave Digger (DJ SS Badboy Foundation Mix)

Monday, July 27th, 2009

MC Lethal put out several wicked EPs on Network Records (a label whose other main rave credits include the bulk of Altern8′s material and Rhythm Quest “Closer To All Your Dreams”). My favorite remix is probably the 2 Bad Mice one on the remix EP, but this DJ SS remix is excellent as well. Lethal also did the excellent and relatively easy to find Dark N Dope EP, which is a bit less anthemy and more straight up quality 93 business.

DJ Junk – Do It Do It

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

Here’s a wicked DJ Junk track I actually had never noticed before, but heard on some discogs forum recently (thanks to spa5tik0lonz for posting it)… it turns out I already had it on an LP reissue of DJ Junk tracks, an LP which btw is cheap, easy to find and a solid buy. Not only does the LP contain a lot of the best DJ Junk tracks (as well as some unreleased bits), it contains descriptions of every tune on it, talking about where he sampled each sound from, what DJs played what tune, etc. Here’s what DJ Junk has to say about “Do it Do it”

This was an unofficial remix of Mental Cube “Q”, speeded up a bit with loops from Meat Beat Manifesto’s “Radio Babylon” and Symphony Sounds “Really Living” over it to give it the ’92 style and a vocal sample from tyhe Disco Four’s “Do it Do it”. This was played by Carl Cox loads of times.

I’m still up to buy the original if anyone has a copy for sale or trade? For now though I did this rip from the LP.

DJ Nasty V & DJ Ezee D – Chill & Destroy

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

Here’s a great track from the label Big Giant… it actually seems more in-line with the releases on their sister label Little Giant to me, as the stuff on there was more straightahead breakbeat hardcore wheras Big Giant had more releases with a hardcore technoey edge. I’ve posted a number of great Little Giant releases here, including the Raveology EP, Nightbreed EP, etc.

“Chill & Destroy” is featured in Easygroove’s 92-93 mix which I posted a while ago, and is a nice straightforward track… no real surprises or change-ups here, just some cachy vocals matched with a bleep-tastic melody. The drums are pretty nondescript but don’t detract from the tune at all. Definitely an essential for the “Eaasygroove R@RE L00K!” crowd.

Oh-Bonic – Wicked

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

Here’s another track by Omar Santana (aka Liquid Metal, Dark Side of the Shroom, etc). Like the previously posted Liquid Metal EP, it’s a techno stormer not unlike “Visual attack” or “The Tingler”. One of the other EPs released under this alias had a rapper on top and sounded more than a little like Quadrophphonia “Quadrophonia”, however this track keeps the vocals out and is a straightahead techno/rave jam.

Sayoko – Sukiyaki

Monday, July 20th, 2009

Here’s an interesting 95 jungle EP I found which isn’t listed discogs or rolldabeats. It’s on the US label Radikal Records, which put out some US pressings of a number of great rave records (as well as some no-so-great ones). The main track on this EP is a reggae tune featuring a Japanese singer named Sayoko along with Beenie Man & Mouse. There are 3 different jungle mixes on this EP: “Baron’s Carribean Jungle mix” , “Dub Massive Jungle Version” and “Doc’s Allen Street Jungle Mix”. All 3 of these were made by Doc Baron, an (I’m guessing) american producer who did a bunch of house remixes on Radikal. The second 2 remixes are very similar… so similar that I had to A/B them to tell the difference. The first remix is definitely the standout for me, with repetitive but unique sounding beats. The other 2 mixes are regular amen mash up stuff: not bad, but let down by the production a bit.

No discogs link since it’s not on there yet (I’ll try to add it soon), anyone looking for more info can click the record image for a higher res scan I found on a Japanese auction site. Apologies for the rip quality, my main mixer is still at a loft I DJ’d at over the weekend, so I ripped this using my old not-as-good setup (belt drive direct into a phono->USB box)

Bush Baby – Mathematics

Friday, July 17th, 2009

According to Wikipedia:

Galagos, also known as bushbabies, bush babies or nagapies (meaning “little night monkeys” in Afrikaans), are small, nocturnal primates native to continental Africa, and make up the family Galagidae (also sometimes called Galagonidae). They are sometimes included as a subfamily within the Lorisidae or Loridae.

According to some accounts, the name bush baby comes from either the animal’s cries or appearance. The South African name nagapie comes from the fact they are almost exclusively seen at night.

Lesson over, on with the ‘ardcore:

Es-Pee-Dee & Dj Distroi – Alphawave EP

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

Here’s an all-time classic that may be “played out” for some more clued in collectors (as it’s an absolute must-have) but it is definitely overlooked by more casual fans. “Alphawave” (actually an untitled A1 track on the EP, but referred to as by that name due to the vocal sample in it) is simplicity itself – 1 or 2 breakbeats simply looped, one synth sound which alternates back and forth between two parts, simple but massive bass, and nothing else… no crazy cut up beats, edited breakdowns, or anything of that sort. That’s probably why this tune is so memorable – that melody really worms its way into your head after minimal listens.

I’m not entirely sure whether my copy of this is a bootleg or not… it definitely came in the picture sleeve as shown on discogs, but there might have been a repress with a similar stamp. If anyone can tell from the sound on my copy, let me know.

GBH – Reach The Sky

Monday, July 13th, 2009

Here’s a single I bought years ago and forgot about until recently. In all that time, I don’t think I’ve ever really listened to the B side. Instead I stuck to the (admittedly strong) A side tune “Back to the Grave”, which combines an MC Duke vocal line, an assortment of heavy breakbeats (including the “give it up + turn it loose” and the “apache”), and a nice skank part.
Recently, someone suggested I check out the B side, and they were right – it’s an equally good tune. which starts full-force and doesn’t let up until the end of hte track. Sample-wise, “Reach the Sky” features the Tongue N Cheek “Nobody” acapella as used in Acen Trip 2 the Moon (“take me higher”), plus the oft-used (in tracks by DJ Junk, Search + Destroy and many others) “we’ll keep climbing, till we reach the sky!” acapella line. There’s also a bit that sounds like more MC Duke in there as well.

As for who did this EP, I’ve got no idea – discogs claims it was released on a Boogie Times sublabel, and DJ Odi confirmed that he has a very similar looking sublabel release on Boogie Times, so it may indeed be from them. That still leaves the question open which artist produced the track though.

Submania – Run Da Labyrinth

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

Another day, another wicked 92 track. I don’t know anything about the artist behind this release… it’s on Pro-One records, which did the heavily in demand / painfully rare Utomica – Rok a Bye EP. Both sides of this EP are pretty killer, and it’s well worth picking up on the cheap.
