Carl Cox – Oldschool set @ EH1

Saturday, October 10th, 2009

Someone on B2VOS posted up a link to the recently hyped / much wondered about Carl Cox “oldskool set”, and it was, erm, as pretty much as expected. I guess it makes sense when considering he labelled it as an “oldschool” set not “oldschool hardcore” that it’s mostly bigger techno/house classics… Still, for anybody who has seen footage of him spinning circa 92-93 and considering that this came from the guy who really helped cement the fundamentals of hardcore with his success-n-effect/landlord mashup track, it’s hard not to be a little bit dissapointed.

As for what he does play, there’s plenty of good house/techno in there (“Red 2″ , Bassheads “Anybody Out There”, that sick Frank De Wulf track, etc). The only moment that really bugs me is Cox spinning a brand new Prodigy track while simultaneously yelling “oh yes oh yes back in the day right here”… simply not true.
Here’s a partial tracklist which was posted along w/ the mix, seems pretty legit up until 40 mins in. There’s definitely some tracks not listed after that point but I kind of lose interest by then so I didn’t bother to add to it. If anybody wants to listen to the rest though, feel free to leave a comment. Thanks to BunkerHeadz from Discogs for completing the tracklist.

New “Oldskool Tribute” dubstep tracks

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

I try to keep this site focused on genuine “made in 91-95″ oldschool stuff since there’s plenty of dubstep/electro blogs to handle the occasional rave flavored new tune in those respective genres. But, in the past day or two, I’ve been linked to some pretty sick throwback tunes by dubstep producers that I don’t know much about. Rather than just being modern sounding tracks with oldschool elements (something VERY common in dubstep/electro), these sound more legit hardcore/jungle tracks with few discernable modern elements aside from sharper production and heavier bass.

First up is one by Redlight aka Clipz:

This second track is by Skream. I heard Craze play this track last Sunday night and it went over really well…. heavy bass + simple beats + the classic “you got me burning up” acapella.

Even though most people know that acapella from the Cloud 9 track “You Got me Burnin’” on Moving Shadow, it was also used several other great oldschool tracks including Anthill Mob “Penelope’s Theme” and this tune:

Rhythm Section – Burnin Up

I swear this is the last lowfi trebly rip I’ll do on this portable Numark… I figure it’s still better than a youtube video though.

Here’s a Rusko track that’s straightahead amens plus oldschool bass (not a wub in sight). Tasty stuff!

I also should mention the HATE singles being released and distributed by Boomkat… I’ve got a few of these and I’m planning on ordering the rest soon enough. Some of these are more “convincing” than others but there’s some serious jams in this series.

If anyone has the Redlight or Rusko tracks, feel free to send me an email… I obviously won’t post them here but would like to hear the full proper tracks.

The Mover (PCP) returns?

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

Ryanopticon just forwarded me this new youtube video which appears to be a new track by The Mover… aka Alien Christ/White Breaks/a million others, not to mention the owner of PCP records. The last record I got from him was this EP on Tresor back in 2002, which was pretty quality. The next year he collaborated with Scooter on a track, which I assumed meant he was done making good music forever. However, this video says otherwise:

The youtube page also includes an mp3 link to the track:

Maybe this doesn’t fit under the typical hardcore-jungle subject matter of this blog, but anyone into classic techno/rave/4/4 hardcore stuff should be familiar with the amazing work of PCP/Cold Spring records. At the very least, check out some of the Frankfurt Trax comps which have a great sellection of Acardipane’s tracks.
