Flynn & Flora – New World

Bit of background info behind this one, Flynn & Flora are the duo of J. Thompson (brother of DJ Krust IIRC) & F. Fiakkas. They debuted on well known Bristol label Full Cycle & had a few releases on there, before setting up their own outlet for their tunes, called Independent Dealers, where they put their album out originally in 1996.

So, I first found out about this tune from hearing a clip of it, which had been taken from Smith & Mighty’s DJ Kicks CD & it was the only audio I had of it for a long time. But having recently acquired the two disc Japanese re-issue of Flynn & Flora’s album, Native Drums, which had a special 2nd disc of selected tunes from the Independent Dealers back cat, I thought it’d be one worth sharing.

  1. Top choice of obscurity here. Flynn & Flora released some absolute stormers in their early career most notably ‘Dream Of You’ and it’s flipside ‘Flowers’. An awesome combination of lush atmospherics and tear out breakbeats. ‘New Word’ is on a par, but sounds unusually ‘ravey’ for a 1996 drum & bass track. Mainly due to the vocal sample manipulation. Something that stood out from the crowd at the time.
