Glowstyx – The Dabbler

With all the the heaps of praise that Zomby’s “Where were u in ’92? album received last year, I have to say I didn’t see the big deal with that one. It was good but didn’t make my head explode scanners-style or anything. On the other hand, there was another recent album of “new-oldschool” stuff which I think was good but barely noticed by anyone, and which seemed to “fall through the cracks”: Glowstyx’s “Class of 92” CD. This album was a concept album by Bong Ra, and came out about a year before the Zomby album. It even has a similar album cover (picture of someone wearing the artist’s T shirt). Rather than just incorporating flourishes of 92 ala the Zomby record, the Glowstyx album takes Prodigy’s “Experience” record as a clear primary influence and extrapolates a lot of the vibes from that into a full new album of old rave music.

Here’s a video for a different track from the album:

You can buy the glowstyx album on mp3 here or check the Glowstyx site for more tunes here.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I should mention that the label which released this album has also released music by me… however, I’m constantly giving the label owner shit for a lot of the new music he’s releasing. I just happen to think this album is good and wish more people would have checked it out.

  1. I didn’t know you’d released music. Under what names if you don’t mind me asking? Also, thanks in general. I have no idea how I stumbled across this site but I’m glad I did. Cheers.

  2. Yeah, he’s Dev/Null!!! A legend!
Great Pete for posting about this! It fits perfectly here! THANKS!

I also wondered heavily about the Zomby record maybe ripping off the Glowstyx, but then resigned it to a unhappy accident…

  3. I’m pretty sure it’s a coincidence w/ the Zomby, it doesn’t sound anything like the Glowstyx record. Still, would be nice if some people into the ravier aspects of that album picked up on Glowstyx.

  4. Oh snap, I never realized you were Dev/Null! Right on.

I love that Glowstyx record, a lot more than the Zomby one really. I wish Bong-Ra would do some more stuff like Glowstyx but with the more breakcore craziness, like “Old School Armageddon” release he did.

  5. I don’t think either record is crap and like I said they’re very different sounding/not that comparable, except on the totally superficial level of “modern producer doing a throwback record”. Overall the Zomby one seems much more to be a stripped down concept album, the glowstyx one is a bunch of crazy big “prodigy experience” style tunes. I’m going to start posting more “new oldschool” stuff on here soon though, since it seems like a lot of different people are converging on those old sounds from different angles…

  6. pete, what happened to that nebula 2 remix you and your buddy [arf sounding american now] did a while back?

  7. Nothing really, Nebula II really liked it but nobody released it or anything. I might post it on here soon.
