The beat-matching should be perfect, the mixing itself should be seamless, and the tracks should be kept in for a large amount of time (almost the whole song?) so that each one can speak on their own. I can definitely appreciate that style of mixing for certain types of tunes – more serious “intelligent” jungle stuff maybe. When it comes to 92-93 hardcore though, I’d much rather hear a mix with a ton of energy and someone trying to pull out all the stops: tracks mixing in and out quickly, extra acapellas dropped on top, tons of scratching etc.
Obviously I’m not stoked to hear full-on trainwrecked DJ sets, but if the mixing is a bit loose for the purposes of making the mix more lively, so be it. Because 91-93 hardcore is so sampleadelic, a lot of tracks from then almost sound like some sort of crazy DJ mix to me, as pulled off by an alien with dozens of arms and an army of +/- 300% turntables. Why not have the DJ mixes follow suite?

Anyway, this dj mix exemplifies that crazy style of mixing perfectly. It’s by Garreth Milford, aka DJ Milf from Yolk. In addition to all the things I mentioned above (quick mixing, scratching, acapellas), the track selection is tight – a few of my favorite tracks are in here. I don’t have time to type up a full tracklisting, but I’ll be posting some of the best tracks over the next few months.
Thanks to Fez from B2VOS for posting this last year:
DJ Milf (Yolk) – Untitled Mix
/blog/audio/DJ%20Milf_Untitled.mp3

You probably know Yolk from the essential / essential / legendary / etc “Sunny Side Up” EP.
